QUÉ ES UN ROYAL COLLEGE.
Un Royal College en UK es un centro de formación con patrocinio Real y permiso para utilizar el prefijo “Royal”. Aunque en Reino Unido existen diferentes instituciones con la denominación de Royal Colleges, como las tres escuelas secundarias privadas en Westminster, Winchester y Eton, este término se aplica normalmente a instituciones médicas.
Los colegios reales disfrutan de una posición privilegiada y ser miembro añade prestigio a licenciados en Medicina de diferentes especialidades. Se ocupan de establecer normas y supervisar la formación práctica especializada de médicos pero la responsabilidad de que esas normas se cumplan recae sobre el General Medical Council (GMC).
En Reino Unido e Irlanda la mayoría de los colegios son miembros de la Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) y participan en actividades internacionales, sobre todo The Royal College of General Practitioners, involucrado activamente en programas internacionales para dotar a los médicos de familia de una formación relevante y de calidad.
Las calificaciones de excelencia obtenidas en los Royal Colleges son reconocidas a nivel internacional y son de igual valor en los diferentes países donde se imparten : un Member of Royal College of Physicians en Reino Unido (MRCPUK) será valorado de la misma forma que otro que haya obtenido su titulación como Member of Royal College of Physicians en Irlanda (MRCPI).
Junto con el General Medical Council, los Royal Colleges otorgan el Certificate of Completion Training que confirma la obtención de la especialidad.
